| PEAK CLIMBING IN NEPAL |
| The Himalayas are the huge mountain range stretching 3000km east to west. The Nepal portion of the Himalayas is the largest and highest, stretching about 800km and includes eight peaks that rise above 8000m including Mt. Everest (known to Nepalese as Sagarmatha).
The Nepal Himalaya has become a great theatre of mountaineering activities. There are many Himalayan peaks open for mountaineering expeditions. In the Nepal Himalaya, there are 240 peaks above 6000m and more than 1300 peaks of 6000m and below. |
|
Pisang Peak offers good scope for exploration. The western flank of the mountain is guarded by a hanging glacier and offers considerable challenge. The western end of the ridge is guarded by huge rock slabs, which make it difficult to climb. A German Expedition made the first ascent of Pisang Peak in 1955. |

The name Island Peak was given to the mountain in 1952 by Eric Shipton's party who were on their way to explore the Barun Gorge. Seen from above Dingboche the mountain does indeed resemble an island in a sea of ice. In 1983 it was renamed Imja Tse, although for most people the descriptive name of Island Peak seems to have been retained.
The mountain was first dimbed in 1953 by a very prestigious team in preparation for the ascent of Everest. They were Charles Evans, Alf Gregory, Charles Wylie and Tenzing Norgay, with seven Sherpas who were trying out the new fangled oxygen sets; as practice, of course, for loftier things. Fortunately this didn't set a precedent and most people seem able to climb it without bottled air, although a Sherpa
Seen from the moraines between Pheriche and Dingboche the mountain doesn't look too impressive, dwarfed as it is by one of the largest mountain faces in the world; the South Face of Lhotse. However, on close inspection it reveals itself to be an interesting and attractive summit with a highly glaciated West Face rising from the Lhotse Glacier. The mountain itself is really an extension of the South Ridge of Lhotse Shar and is separated from it by a small col. Above this gap, rising to the south, is a classically beautiful ridge leading to the summit of lmja Tse. The continuation of this ridge, descending south-west, provides part of the normal route of ascent and leads in turn to the South Summit, seen capping the rocky west facet of the mountain when viewed from near Chhukhung.
As well as providing an enjoyable climb the peak also provides some of the most striking scenery in the Khumbu. If the peak can be likened to an island in a glacial sea, then the mainland forms a semicircle of cliffs that rise in the north to the rugged summits of Nuptse (7.879m) Lhotse (8.501m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8.410m), as yet still unclimbed and Lhotse Shar (8.383m). To the east, rising above the frozen waves of the Lhotse Shar Glacier, is Cho Polu (6.734m). beyond which can be seen the red granite mass of Makalu (8,475m).
To the south of the Imja Glacier the icy flutings of Baruntse (7.720m) and the Amphu peaks lead the eye to the lofty pinnacle of Ama Dablam (6.856m) which is like a giant sea-stack guarding the entrance to the glacial bay in which Island Peak stands |

Chuli East (6,584 m.) is situated high above the Manang valley with breathtaking views across to the Annapurna II, III and IV, Gangapurna, Glacier Dome, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho Peak and Manaslu. The climb is combined with the classic trek around the Annapurna massif, ascending the Marshyangdi valley and crossing the Thorong La, before descending the Kali Gandaki valley to Pokhara. The climb is technically straightforward and you should be familiar with the use of your equipment, crampons, harness, ice axe, tying knots and handling climbing ropes. Most of the climbing will be involved walking roped together, including the glacial crossings. You should be very fit and have good experience of climbing.
The North-East Ridge is considered the normal route to climb this peak from a Base Camp on the moraine at 5334m (17500ft). Most climbers make it to the top and back from Base Camp in one long day although some have, in the past, established a higher camp somewhere below the peak. Another subsidiary peak called Chulu Far East (6059m) 19880ft) may also be attempted from this approach.

Chulu West and Chulu Central are best accessed from a base camp situated in a small valley north of Manang off the main trail to the Thorong La. Some of the best views of these peaks can be had from that pass. When climbing these peaks, be prepared for steep scree to col a 4,900 m. North of the col ascend snow slopes for 200 meters to a rock band at 5,100 m. Climb this difficult rock band to 5,450 m., cross onto a snow plateau at 5,530m. and follow the progressively narrowing ridge to the summit (Chulu West).
To Climb Chulu Central, cross the snow plateau and then traverse onto the Chulu Glacier basin east of the ridge. Ascend the broad glacier slopes avoiding serac obstacles. While not technically difficult, this area can be nasty in soft snow and is prone to avalanche under certain conditions. Continue toward the obvious Central summit on steepening snow until it is possible to gain the crest of the summit ridge, which may be corniced. This leads directly to a small saddle and the final 15 meter pinnacle. |

Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal, which is climbable by people without mountaineering experience. It is situated on the edge of the famous Khumbu region, which is dominated by Mount Everest. Although very high, Mera is a straightforward climb and is frequently ascended by groups and individuals whose only climbing qualifications are that they are fit and have an out-going sense of adventure.
This special expedition to Mera is designed for those who only have three working weeks' holiday time available. The first fourteen days take us south from the airstrip at Lukla, trekking through beautiful forested hillsides and over several passes before climbing up to the Mera La. After the climb, we descend directly to Lukla via the Zatrwa La pass.
The Mera Expedition is a high-altitude trek and climb and participants need to be fit and conversant with the use of an ice-axe and crampons. Instruction in the use of these will be given at our base camp near the Mera La if required. In good conditions it is possible for a fit party to reach the summit and return to base camp in one day. It is normal, however, to establish a high-camp at 19,000ft/5,800m on the Mera Glacier, in order to shorten the summit day. This is a rewarding experience as it provides glorious views of Nepal and a vista that takes in Kangchenjunga and Makalu to the east and Everest appearing over the massive southern aspect of Nuptse and Lhotse to the north. To the west stand the spires of Ama Dablam and Kang Taiga and in the distance is the mighty bastion of Cho Oyu. This is a fine panorama of many of the world's highest peaks. |

Phapchermo peak (6187m/20298ft) was first climbed in 1955. This is a relatively attractive snow peak, which lies due south of Tashi Lapcha. It has a well defined north by north-west ridge rising from the crevassed glacier astride the Tashi Lapcha. To the west of the ridge the face forms a uniform snow slope broken by crevasses and seracs rising from the rocky lower buttresses above the Drolambau glacier. Access to Phapchermo is mainly through the Rolwaling valley. For most of the 1980's this route was closed due to the potential dangers which could be causes to the porters crossing the Tashi Lapcha. The only other route from the Khumbu side via Namche Bazaar and Thame. Now the Rolwaling valley has once again been opened for trekking. The journey through Rolwaling takes one climbing a peak or two and crossing a high glaciated Pass followed by a descent and a return trek through new country. The trip through the Rolwaling valley is truly considered an exhilarating "mountaineering adventure". |
